A pattern in the coating.
Vertical stripes in an ultraviolet-reflective coating on the outside face of the glass. Birds see ultraviolet. People mostly do not.
The unit is cut open to show it. The pattern sits on the outside face of the outer lite, so a bird meets it before it meets the reflection. Behind it is the same sealed, insulated unit as any other Vistaza window.
Threat factor: lower is safer.
Bird-safe glass is rated with a threat factor from 0 to 100. It comes from testing how often birds avoid the glass. A score around 50 means the pattern made no difference. The lower the number, the more birds see the glass and turn away.
New York City asks for bird-friendly materials with a threat factor of 25 or less on the building envelope up to 75 feet above grade, where most strikes happen.
Bird-safe, and still certified.
Choosing bird-safe glass does not take the window out of the rated system. ViBird has its own NFRC-certified U-factor and SHGC and its own sound rating, so the energy model and the noise report use real numbers for the bird-safe openings too.
