Exterior trims.

The profile that finishes the joint between the frame and the facade.

Vistaza Engineering · Feb 9, 2023 · Updated Sep 20, 2026 · 4 min read

An exterior trim answers a visible question: how the joint between the window frame and the facade is finished. It is a finish, not an anchor. How the frame is anchored and sealed to the wall is a separate subject, covered in Nailing fins.

What an exterior trim is.

The wall is usually thicker than the window frame, so the window sits back in its opening. The trim is the profile that stands out from the frame along that reveal, to the face of the wall. Sealed to the wall, it closes the joint between frame and wall and protects it. It is also called a casing. A deeper one is called a shadow box, and it shades the glass a little.

One profile, two depths.

There is one Vistaza trim profile, in two depths: 2 inches and 4 inches. The depth is how far the trim stands out from the frame. Both are multi-chamber uPVC, about 1-3/16 inches thick, with the same leg engaging the outer edge of the frame. The trim sits even with the frame and is screwed to it on an angle, from the back.

The trim is cut to size and mitered at 45 degrees at our plant, not on site. It arrives as four pieces for each opening — head, sill and two jambs — packed so the miters are protected, labeled with the opening number, and loaded with the windows they belong to. On site the pieces are screwed to the frame, with a sealant bead against the wall and along the visible corner joints.

It runs on both the Vi6 and the Vi5, and on the Vi5 it can be combined with a nailing fin. It is by request, and it is drawn for each opening on the head, jamb and sill details of the shop drawings.

Why uPVC.

The material decides how much maintenance the owner takes on.

MaterialForAgainst
Solid woodTraditional. Takes paint or stainRegular repainting. Costly
Engineered woodResists moisture and decayStill a painted finish
Fiber cementDurable. Wood-grain textureHeavy. Slow to install
AluminumDurable, light, low maintenanceHigh cost. Reads industrial
uPVCDoes not rot. Little maintenanceNot real wood

On a uPVC window, a uPVC trim in the frame color means one material, one color match, one maintenance routine, and the same great energy performance as the window.

The energy part matters, because the perimeter of an opening is where a wall is most easily bridged. A metal trim lays a conductive path across the very joint the insulation is there to protect. A uPVC trim does not add that path. When the wall-to-window junction is modeled, the trim can be treated as the window's own material rather than as a separate conductive component sitting across the detail.

Color.

There are two approaches. Match the trim to the cladding, and the windows recede into the facade. Contrast it, either darker than everything around it or a clear white, and the windows become the pattern of the elevation.
